Drone Survey Documents Roof Deterioration at Historic Sheffield Building

Using Drone Technology to Record Heritage Buildings

CAV Aerial was recently commissioned by the Victorian Society to carry out an aerial survey of a historic building in Sheffield as part of ongoing heritage documentation work.

The purpose of the survey was to capture high-resolution imagery of areas that are difficult to inspect from ground level and to provide an up-to-date visual record of the building's condition.

Historic buildings can present significant access challenges, particularly when roofs, towers and upper elevations require inspection. Drone technology allows these areas to be documented safely, efficiently and without the need for scaffolding or other temporary access equipment.

What the Aerial Survey Revealed

The drone survey provided a unique perspective of the building's roof structures and inaccessible upper areas.

The imagery identified a number of significant defects visible from above, including:

  • Extensive roof deterioration

  • Areas where roof coverings are no longer intact

  • Exposed structural elements

  • Vegetation growth within roof areas

  • Open sections vulnerable to weather ingress

  • Evidence of long-term deterioration in inaccessible locations

In several locations, the extent of the damage was only fully apparent when viewed from the air.

The survey demonstrates how aerial imagery can provide valuable information that may not be visible from street level.

Supporting Heritage Documentation

One of the key advantages of drone surveys is the ability to create a detailed visual record of a building's condition at a specific point in time.

For heritage organisations, conservation groups and building stakeholders, this information can help support:

  • Condition assessments

  • Heritage documentation

  • Conservation planning

  • Funding applications

  • Future maintenance and restoration projects

By providing accurate imagery of difficult-to-access areas, drone surveys can contribute to a better understanding of the challenges facing historic buildings.

Why Drones Are Valuable for Heritage Buildings

Across the UK, many historic buildings require ongoing monitoring and assessment to understand their condition and identify emerging issues.

Traditional inspections often involve significant cost, access requirements and disruption. Drone technology provides a safe and cost-effective alternative, allowing high-resolution imagery to be captured quickly while minimising impact on the site.

For heritage organisations and property owners, aerial surveys can offer an efficient way to document roofs, towers, masonry, drainage systems and other elevated structures.
